Botox before and after | Everything you need to know before you get it done

Let's be very clear from the beginning: Fine lines and wrinkles are 100% normal and something everyone will experience at some point in their lives. However for those who don't like them we have botulinum toxin, or botox. This treatment is used extensively in dermatology for prevent and correct these manifestations of aging.

In this article we will review many cases of Botox (before and after) to see the results we can achieve. I will also explain extensively what this well-known treatment is all about.

What will I talk about in this article?

What is Botox or botulinum toxin?

Botox treatment consists of small injections in the areas to be treated, which reversibly block the nerve impulse that produces muscle contraction. This creates a relaxation of facial muscles achieving to stop the appearance of expression wrinkles temporarily.

Botox produces a rejuvenation of the eyes due to its action on the periocular musculature and forehead. It has a rejuvenating effect without the need for surgery. It is used to treat mainly the upper third of the face, softening the look and eliminating expression wrinkles between the eyebrows and crow's feet. Ref

However, it is not only used in aesthetic dermatology, as it is also used to treat several medical conditions, such as migraine, strabismus, dystonia or the hyperhidrosis, also known as excessive sweating. Lack of knowledge and misinformation in the media have generated many false myths about Botox. Ref

How does Botox or botulinum toxin work?

Botox is a neurotoxin that is produced naturally by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. These substances target the peripheral nervous system (neuro-muscular junction), interrupting the nerve signaling processes that stimulate muscle contraction. In this way Botox, causes a temporary paralysis of the muscle and secondarily muscle relaxation. Ref

For any muscle to contract, nerves release a chemical messenger called acetylcholine at the junction where nerve endings meet muscle cells. Acetylcholine attaches to receptors on muscle cells and causes the cells to contract or shorten.

Botox injections prevent the release of acetylcholine, which prevents muscle cells from contracting. In this way, the toxin helps the muscles relax and thus prevents wrinkles from developing.

Who is botox for and what results do I expect?

This treatment is indicated for both men and women who want to prevent or improve facial wrinkles. In the following images you can see some results obtained with the application of botox. You can browse through the images and see the before and after.

The effect of botulinum toxin begins to be evident between the third and fourth day of treatment. Until the first 10-14 days this effect is progressive, giving increasingly noticeable results of a smoother face without expression wrinkles.

When should I start using botox?

Most people wait until they start to see wrinkles before seeking Botox treatment, but preventive treatment uses Botox to treat wrinkles before they appear.

If you're looking for a hard and fast rule on when to start Botox, I'm going to disappoint you, because there isn't one. Although many people start preventive treatment in their 20s and 30sThere is no "magic" age at which you should start having it done.

Instead, you should focus on your skin and its problems. Once you start to notice expression lines starting to appear, that's when you should consider Botox. If you want to prevent early expression lines from turning into full-blown wrinkles, preventive Botox is a very good option.

What areas are treated with botox?

As I mentioned previously, botox has many indications and can be used in many facial areas. In the illustration below you can see the most typical areas in which we apply botox, but there are more indications.Ref

Illustration shows the areas that can typically be treated with botox.

Areas in which botox can be applied:

  • Front Ref
  • Between the eyebrows
  • Rooster Legs
  • Gingival smile Ref
  • Nasal dorsum ("Bunny lines")

Botox before and after

Botox has acquired a bad reputation during the last few years, since in the face of any poorly performed aesthetic procedure, the press tends to say: "How bad the botox is" or "He has overdone it" or "His face is swollen with botox". The truth is that rarely the causal procedure is botulinum toxin and under no circumstances does botox fill or swell the face. If you want to to continue reading about the myths of botox you can see the following article.

To illustrate the advantages of this procedure and why dermatologists love it, we will see several images below.

Botox before and after for frown lines between the eyebrows

Frown lines or glabellar wrinkles are the vertical creases that appear between the eyebrows, generating a tired or angry look. With this treatment we can subtly smooth these frown lines, resulting in a rejuvenated and more relaxed appearance.

Patient consulted for wrinkles between the eyebrows and told me that they bothered her a lot because they made her look angry. In the image you can see a very good before and after result with a very happy patient.

Botox before and after for crow's feet

Botox reduces the visibility of crow's feet by relaxing the muscles around the corners of the eyes, raising drooping eyebrows and making the eyes larger. After applying Botox, you should notice that the skin under and around your eyes looks smoother, and the difference should be particularly noticeable when you smile.

In this patient we applied botox in the crow's feet to obtain the results you can see in the image. The patient was very happy because she told me during the consultation that she noticed that her eyes closed when she smiled and that this gave her a "tired" look.

Botox before and after for forehead wrinkles

Forehead wrinkles, also known as "frown lines," become more evident as we age. Excessive forehead wrinkles can give the face and skin an aged appearance.

How long does Botox last?

Wouldn't we like Botox to last forever? Unfortunately, it doesn't. Eventually, the action of the neurotoxin will wear off and the nerves can once again send those signals to the muscles to start working or contracting. Ref

You've probably heard that botox lasts for 6 months. But my answer is: depends on your basal muscle contraction type and other personal factors.

  • Normal or weak muscle contraction. Botox tends to last longer and we can see sustained results for 5-6 months.
  • Hyperdynamic muscle contraction. This is the typical patient who gesticulates a lot on a daily basis. We see that in these patients the botox lasts between 4-5 months, or even the duration can be shorter.
  • Hypertonic muscle contraction. This is the patient who constantly has contracted facial muscles and from a very young age presents expression wrinkles. I see it especially between the eyebrows and forehead. In these patients it tends to last a little less than 3-4 months.
It is also common for people who are apply for the first time notice that it does not last that long at first, but may last longer after the second treatment. Each person has a unique experience and results may vary.

Another interesting thing is that the the effect of botox is not immediate and the day you go home you will not notice any difference. In the following chart you will see how many days it takes to take effect:

How many days does it take for the effect to start?

3-7 days

Botulinum toxin begins to act between 3-7 days and its maximum effect will be seen after 2 weeks.. From then on, the effect will progressively diminish until it disappears after 3-6 months.

Is Botox safe?

If you are thinking about undergoing a Botox treatment, you may have questions about the safety of Botox. Botox has been used for over 100 years, and in the last decade it has become an incredibly popular anti-aging therapy.

Botox is an approved treatment worldwide, and it is when administered by trained and experienced professionals, there is a very low risk of side effects and complications. "Read the instructions for this medicine and consult the pharmacist."

Botox is suitable for a wide range of people, but there are restrictions that must be applied. Botox is intended for healthy men and women over the age of 18. It is not suitable for people with some underlying health conditions, including those with neurological and muscular diseases. If you are pregnant or have had an allergic reaction to Botox in the past, this treatment is also not suitable.

Botox Price in Barcelona

The average cost of a botulinum toxin treatment in reputable clinics with experienced practitioners is in the region of between 350-450€.. Costs may vary depending on the number of injections, the size of the treatment area and the geographic location where the treatment is received.

Botulinum toxin for cosmetic purposes is an elective procedure. Medical insurance does not cover the cost when used for these reasons.

Preparation prior to the visit

There is not much you should do to prepare for a Botox treatment. Although you may be tempted to take a pain reliever to lessen the discomfort you may feel, these medications are also blood thinners and may increase the risk of bruising.

The doctor will cleanse your skin before the treatment, but it is always appreciated if you can come to the appointment without makeup.

What do my patients say?

I want to share my experience with Botox on my face. I recommend it, the change is fantastic, it changes your face a lot, it improves a lot the expression lines and the result is very good. I had never had a Botox treatment on my face and frankly I was a little scared but when I decided to have the treatment and then I saw the results I really recommend it.
The treatment was excellent and the result of the botox was spectacular. As he explained to me, I started to notice the results after 3-4 days. He informed me very well before the application and gave me a lot of security the fact that you can contact him afterwards, in case of any doubt. I am delighted and, of course, when the effect wears off I will come back to him again.
