Effectively preventing and removing frown lines between the eyebrows

There's no doubt that gesturing like laughing and getting angry create frown lines on the face. However, over time, what happens is that frowning can make you look constantly angry or tired. Smiling is so much more fun! So put on a happy face and, in the meantime, I'll show you how to get rid of those frown lines. My name is Sebastian Podlipnik and I am a dermatologist in Barcelona, Spain. In this article I will explain the most effective ways to prevent and remove frown lines between the eyebrows from a dermatologist's point of view.

What I will tell you about in this article

Why do wrinkles appear between the eyebrows?

Frown lines between the eyebrows are caused by mainly due to aging and gesticulation. As we age, the skin loses elasticity and does not easily recover its original shape, leaving these wrinkles marked.

They usually develop over time as we habitually contract the muscles that make us squint or when we get angry, which forces the skin to pull together and form these wrinkles. Add genetics to the equation, as well as thinning of the skin and loss of elastin and collagen as we age, and we see that the skin stops regaining its original shape after making certain facial expressions.

But this is not all. There are other personal characteristics that could contribute to have expression lines and that could affect some people more than others.
  • Genetics. Your DNA determines whether you have the type of skin that is resilient or elastic and can delay fine lines.
  • Sunlight. UV rays from sunlight break down elastin and collagen in the skin, making it more susceptible to wrinkling with age.
  • Repeated expressions. If there is a facial expression you make often (such as frowning, smiling, squinting or furrowing your brows), you may be more prone to expression lines.
  • Stress. It can cause tension in the face, which can lead to repeated facial expression, which can result in frown lines.
  • Smoking. The repeated motion of smoking a cigarette or cigar can cause frown lines around the mouth. Inhaled tobacco smoke causes wrinkles and expression lines due to the narrowing of blood vessels, which cause less oxygenated blood to reach these tissues.

How to prevent frown lines between the eyebrows?

You may have come across many blogs with care routines for the treatment and prevention of frown lines, however, in my opinion, many of them are marketing strategies to sell products that have no scientific evidence and no real impact on these wrinkles. Quote

So, is there anything that can be done to prevent the appearance of these wrinkles? Here are some things that from my point of view make sense and have a scientific basis to prevent frown lines between the eyebrows.

  1. Sun protection: The sun accumulates on our skin producing changes that can be seen over time. One of the most characteristic ones is the appearance of facial blemishes and the loss of skin elasticity. The latter consequence will make it much easier to produce and maintain facial wrinkles.
  2. Retinoid creams: Supplementing your skin care with retinol products can help improve the superficial wrinkles between the eyebrows. In other words, it will help improve the quality of the skin and the wrinkles you can see when you are at rest.
  3. Modulate facial expressions. Intense and sustained facial expressions are largely responsible for frown lines between the eyebrows. It is logical to think that if we try not to make these movements we can prevent wrinkles, but in practice it is not easy to do this. But there are occasions when we can prevent frowning. For example, when wearing glasses, being exposed to the sun or smoking.

The best cosmetic treatment to remove wrinkles between the eyebrows is botox.

However, from a scientific point of view and with ample scientific evidence we have seen that neuromodulators such as Botox, Dysport and Xeomin can be highly effective for the treatment of wrinkles between the eyebrows, crow's feet and forehead. Quote

A small amount relaxes the overactive muscles in the area to prevent the type of contraction that causes wrinkles. They take about a week to take effect, but the results are unbeatable when it comes to fine lines. Deeper, more pronounced expression lines often work best with a combination treatment of Botox and hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane, which lift and fill simultaneously.
